The Era of Celebrity Skincare

The era of celebrity skincare

When I worked in pharmacies in the mid-noughties, there was a huge craze for celebrity perfumes. There were so many different types, and anyone who was anyone seemed to have a fragrance line. The ones I remember most were those from Britney Spears, The Beckhams, J Lo & Sarah Jessica Parker. Which ones do you remember? Celebrity fragrances are very much an endangered species these days, times have moved on to celebrity skincare.

Celebrity Skincare is the new fragrance?

However, in recent years celebrities have turned their attention to the skincare market. Celebrities including Rihanna (Fenty), Kylie Jenner (Kylie Skin) and Brad Pitt (Le Domaine) are now all in the skincare game. But are their ranges superior just because of celebrity endorsement?

Famous people have put their name to various products from clothing lines to alcohol, so why not skincare.

I have no doubt that celebrities work with the best cosmetic chemists to produce their ranges. It isn't that easy to create new formulations with no experience in this field. But how much is their focus on producing quality products for the health of consumers' skin and how much is on their profit-line?

Many skincare experts have recently voiced their concern, especially when Brad Pitt announced his latest range. They feel celebrities are only producing skincare lines because they have the means to do so and not necessarily because they have a genuine interest in the industry. The skincare products market seems to always be on the increase and can be extremely lucrative with the right products. So, it makes total sense from a entrepreneurial point-of-view, to cash in on this opportunity if it possible.

For the average person pursuing the development of a skincare business it can be a laborious road and a financially risky undertaking. So, it must be deflating to see someone famous gain almost instant traction in this business for who they are, whether or not they have ever feigned interest in this area previously.

Celebrity influence

I did a poll recently on my Instagram stories about influencers. More than 90% of voters have been motivated into buying a product on the recommendation from a social media expert. Celebrities are the original influencers and have been marketing various products, often unrelated to their careers, over many years. People admire them and want to be them, so, naturally want to emulate them by using their favourite products. But instead of posing with a favourite product, nowadays celebrities seem much more involved in their chosen enterprises. They seem to be working with experts to bring out their own ranges, which implies that they at least have a vested interest in their products.

But it seems like every week there is a new skincare brand range produced, leading to suggest a 'jumping on the bandwagon' type of approach for guaranteed success, rather than a life-long ambition.

We know many celebrities have access to the best dermatologists and aestheticians, as well as the best products and treatments, so there is little doubt to the quality but are we supposed to believe that because a celebrity 'made' something it is superior to other products out there already? Do we need more new brands?

Who does celebrity skincare appeal to?

When we think of celebrities, we often think of luxury and extravagance. Many people would love a piece of their lifestyle so maybe using their skincare brand allows them to feel like an A-list. People are often fascinated by what celebrities use in their everyday lives, so when they bring out their own ranges there is already a market established for them.
However, some celebrities have gone all out with their expensive brands that you wonder who do they appeal to. Surely, not everyone can afford to or want to splash £300 on a small, 'anti-ageing' serum.
I admire other celebrity skincare products which go down the affordable route as they make them more accessible to their fans. But even after all this, is there anything new that they bring to the table with regards ingredient or cosmetic technology? Or is it all about the name?

My A-list skincare tips

If you really want to try a celebrity skincare line and the products sound appealing, then go for it. Perhaps start off with one product to see how you find it, rather than buying a complete regimen. I would recommend this whichever new brand you are considering. Check the ingredients are suitable for your skin before splurging. If you follow me or have read my previous blogs then you probably already know my take on this.

My view on skincare is it should

  • be straightforward to use
  • have a no-nonsense claim to how it works
  • suit your budget
There are no miracle formulations and I always emphasise the importance of patience and consistent use of your chosen products for best results. The key is finding products that work for you!

However, there will be nothing wrong with any product range brought to the market regardless of the source. Strict regulations are in place to ensure consumer safety and there are advertising laws which prohibit outrageous claims, but often the marketing over-hypes and over-inflates prices. There are fabulous products out there with amazing ingredients without the need to pay over the odds.

I much prefer being 'influenced' by those in the skincare industry, with established brands, and who have a passion and comprehension for all things skin health, rather than placing my trust in a celebrity-branded range. This is especially true if I've never heard them mention skincare previously.
